Our Rovers

The Adelaide Rover Team (ART) has been on the journey of rover building since 2021. From Lil’ Gaz to Romulus, each rover represents the team’s pursuit of smart design, improved performance, and reliable capability.

Rovers Through the Years

Mechanical Evolution

Capability Expansion

  • Introduction of the first fully robotic arm and four steerable wheels - Egg

  • Expanded payload functions including plough-style tools and a water processing system - M.I.L.O

  • Development of customised tools such as an excavation drill, a rock-boring drill, and a scoop - Aurora

  • Transitioned from a six-wheeled system to an individual steering four-wheel drive - Romulus

Structural Modularity

  • A racking-style chassis design improved visibility and accessibility of internal components

  • Payload mounting options pushed from fixed positions to front-or-rear attachment

  • Allowed quick swapping and reconfiguration (i.e. the time of robotic arm installation reduced from 3 hours to 5 minutes)

  • Cleaner and more organised structural layouts improved maintenance

Reliability

  • Constant improvements in the drive and suspension systems

  • Mechanical, electrical and software designs moved toward industry-aligned standards

  • Simplification of systems reduced unnecessary complexity (i.e. tranisitioned from six-wheeled design to individually steerable four drive)

Did You Know…?

Mascot

Kevin is the “heart“ of Romulus! The team created two versions - Evil Kevin (left) and Happy Kevin (right).

The Best Team Cultural Award

“We played rock-paper-scissors for 10 minutes during a technical glitch.”

Two stones holding hands. Evil Kevin (left) and Happy Kevin (right).

Highlight Moment

Romulus was displayed at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the world’s largest space-focused international conference.

On-the-fly Engineering

“We tied 2 bending-outwards suspension arms with ropes.”

“We bent mental brackets to hold cameras.”
