Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources (ATCSR)

The Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources (ATCSR) at Adelaide University is Australia’s leading hub for space resource research and innovation. Named in honour of astronaut Andy Thomas, the Centre drives the development of technologies and capabilities that will enable sustainable exploration and utilisation of extraterrestrial resources, supporting humanity’s return to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

ATCSR’s mission is to advance space resource science, engineering, and technology while providing practical research opportunities for students, academics, and industry partners. Our work spans:

  • Resource extraction and processing in extraterrestrial environments.

  • Autonomous robotics and teleoperation for remote and extreme environments.

  • Advanced materials and manufacturing techniques for space applications.

The Centre actively collaborates with universities, government agencies, space organisations, and industry partners, fostering interdisciplinary research that addresses real-world challenges in space exploration.

ATCSR also champions STEM outreach, inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists through educational programs, workshops, and competitions. By integrating research, education, and industry collaboration, the Centre ensures Australia maintains a competitive edge in the global space sector.
